Maya women from the villages of Chichicastenango - Sololá - Nahualá - and Santiago Atitlán create these wonderful dolls by making a handwoven body (fabric in rich brown tones) which is woven on a foot loom. After that - they weave the doll's clothing - which mirrors their own traditional dress called - Traje on backstrap looms in their home villages. Then - the women come together in the Maya Traditions workshop in Panajachel where they finish the dolls - filling - sewing - affixing the hair and dressing them. The Maya Doll project has been a source of pride and steady work for these women who do every step of the production by hand.
