This Chulucanas vase is a stunning piece of cultural history! In the late 1960?s a group called Sanoc Camayoc started reviving traditional pre-Colombian pottery techniques. Through many trials and errors they discovered the technique used to create the black on white and white on black patterns - and today Chulucanas pottery has achieved worldwide recognition. The three Adanague brothers make this vase that depicts a contemporary version of traditional Viscus geometric designs. Each brother is in charge of a separate step in the process. One of the brothers forms the vessel - one decorates it - and the third is in charge of firing and final preparation of it. They have been working in this cooperative manner for more than 15 years - and through their pottery making they have been able to raise their standard of living considerably. From a predominately rural agricultural past they are now able to provide their children with many of the modern conveniences that they did not have as children.
