Baby Planet Saving the Earth One Stroller at a Time!

So, it seems that our vision to live in a world that focuses on the health and sustainability of our planet is growing everyday. People everywhere are realizing the effects of our consumerism as they begin to make the change to building and supporting businesses that are focused on benefiting the environment, our communites and other communities throughout the world. Over the past year of business, as we have become more educated and affiliated with green businesses and concepts we are so often thrilled to see the amount of products being made available to the people.

There are dozens of organic health and beauty lines. The organic cotton industry is booming. Fair trade clothing, coffee and crafts are steadily being added to well established businesses as well as new businesses coming up with a focus on fairly traded items. Our country as we know it is responding to the calls of social and environmental justice on a scale that is expanding each day and rapidly each year.

Recently, I have being writing content for several sites that are primarily focused on babies and mommies. My life is primarily focused on my babies and I am most of the time answering to the name of mommy, so it has been a very fulfilling job. I am learning about so much pertaining to all aspects of parenting, from breastfeeding to strollers and everything in between. When a product or issue strikes me, I feel I need to expand my new found knowledge to as many people as possible. So, in the vein of what we work for here at Organic Fair Trade I have discovered a new eco-friendly baby stroller manufacturer called Baby Planet and wanted to lend our kudos to their efforts.

Baby Planet came onto the stroller scene a few years back with a mission to design strollers that were baby friendly and environmentally friendly. Each year they expand and improve on this vision a little more and have already added an impressive product line for 2008.

Each stroller is designed to optimize comfort as well as provide a very durable and reliable ride for the baby as well as the parent. They offer a variety of lightweight, aluminum strollers as well as the Unity Sport Twin Stroller for those parents with more than one child who needs a push.

Baby Planet is concerned about the rapid rate at which our current landfills are growing so they have implemented their own donation and recycling programs for used strollers. They encourage parents who no longer have a need for their stroller to donate or recycle it to Baby Planet. If the stroller is in good, usable condition it will then be passed onto a family in need. If the stroller is past it's prime and needs to be discarded, Baby Planet will be sure to accuately disassemble the parts so that the material may be recycled. No worries, the recycled parts will never be used to produce another Baby Planet stroller in adherence to their safety regulations.

In addition to their recycling programs, Baby Planet has also engineered and designed a separate product line called the Endangered Species series. Partnered with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) , Baby Planet has introduced this new line in 2008 which focuses it's efforts on the resoration of our precious endangered wildlife.

Each stroller is dedicated to a specific endangered animal and is fashioned according to the qualities of that animal. Not only are they cause worthy but they are also really great looking, my favorite is the Lemur Leaf Frog! Each animal chosen is currently listed as an endangered species or to be living in an endangered habitat. For every Endangered Species stroller sold, Baby Planet will donate $5 to the WCS in addition to the current yearly contributions they already pledge. The money will be used by the WCS to further protect and restore these animals and their habitats.

All Baby Planet strollers are JPMA certified and last year the Unity Sport Twin Stroller was among the ten products to receive the 2007 JPMA Innovation Reward for it's unique features.

If you or any one you know is in the market for a baby stroller then this is definitely the company to seek out. Although there are many options out there for strollers, no other company employs such consciousness to their products as Baby Planet is doing. Please pass on the info about their recycling and donation prgrams to anyone you may know looking to get rid of their own. The stroller brand doesn't matter if usable it will certainly be passed onto a family who only cares about having a stroller not a particular stroller, so many folks cannot afford to be picky.

I look forward to 2008 and what those of us who are focused on creating a more harmonious earth will introduce to the world. It is with great hope that we live on!

Peace,

About Organic Fair Trade

We wrote this as an informational piece about our company to be displayed at an upcoming festival in Lake Charles, Louisiana where we will have a booth. We thought we would share this with our online community as well!

Organic Fair Trade grew from the idea that making a living for our family, and making the world a better place could be one in the same.

We felt that the only way to counteract the negative relationships in the world, such as those between poor producers and rich consumers, was to promote our own vision of loving relationships. We wished for everything in our home to be either fair trade, organic, or both. But this seemed impossible as the products were either not available where we lived, or were too expensive.

We knew that this would only change if we ourselves began to devote our energies toward increasing quality in our world—quality of lives, as well as quality of products. So beginning in March of 2006, we began forming relationships with others who shared our vision of a peaceful, healthy, and equitable world.

While Organic Fair Trade offers a wide selection of products that carry either organic certifications, fair trade certifications, or both, our main emphasis is currently upon fair trade clothing, jewelry and accessories for both men and women. We know that these industries are under great pressure by economic forces, large companies who wish to minimize cost and capture their share of this lucrative market. Primarily young teenage women across Latin America, Africa and Asia carry most of the burden, working long hours in usually unsafe conditions for less than minimal wages.

Our clothing, handbags, wallets, hats, scarves, dresses, shirts, necklaces, rings and bracelets are from virtually every place in the world where workers are being exploited. However our products are different in that they represent the work of small collectives of people who have voluntarily agreed to work with small importers in the United States, with the mutual guarantee of reasonable working conditions, good pay, investments in long term growth, and an honest, carefully produced product. We feel the quality of work speaks for itself.

In addition to durable items, however, we also carry a broad selection of organic food and supplements including coffee, yerba mate, oils and organic nut butters, raw cacao, and several exotic delicacies. We also have a good selection of organic mattresses, blankets, pillows, comforters and sets.

We are based in Lafayette, Louisiana, and while we currently do most of our sales through the Internet, we are always in search of opportunities to present our selection in a face to face manner, and hope to one day open a physical store.

If you would like to get in touch, please visit us on the web at www.organic-fair-trade.com. We can also be reached by phone at (337) 255-3355.

Thank you for business, and thank you for supporting fair trade!

New Fair Trade Clothing!

Hello Everyone!

I just wanted to announce our new clothing line from our friend Fair Trade Industry! We are really proud of the products added from this manufacturer and feel that is is very different from the other clothing line we already offer. Fair Industry designs are original and produced in the countries of Kenya and Bangladesh. The founder designs her own clothes and jewelry and has them made by artisans for a fair wage.

There is a simple yet sophisticated style to the clothing and jewelry that I think would be great for a casual day at the park or worn to the office for a workday. If you search the market for fair trade clothing you will find many indigenous styles but not often do you find clothing that seems versatile as well as comfortable with a fair trade concept. I was really excited when I came across this line and even moreso when we decided to work together. And to make it even better the prices are fantastic!

Please peruse our site and check out the new tops, skirts, pants, earrings and necklaces from Fair Industry!

Peace,

Google Earth Brings Darfur Genocide into Focus

Google has teamed up with the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum to launch the Genocide Mapping Initiative, which aims to increase awareness and understanding of genocide by using Google Earth to visually communicate its reality to millions of computer users worldwide.

Typing "Darfur, Sudan" into Google Earth transports you to the region, where you are shown numerous icons that represent damaged or destroyed villages and refuge camps. You can click on one of these and are given the option of downloading the "Crisis in Darfur" layer for Google Earth, which contains numerous photos, videos, and testimonies of victims of the artocities. Users can zoom in on the devastation and the refuge camps in Sudan and eastern Chad. Users are also provided clear links for learning more about the crisis and how to get involved.

It is hoped that this technology will help more people understand the severity of the situation and be moved to action, such as pressuring their governments to get involved to protect civilians. The Google Earth technology can also be used to create presentations for churches or community groups, in order to further build public pressure regarding the necessity of intervention.

It's been some time since we've written, but hopefully now you can see why! The last two months we have been undergoing extensive renovations behind the scenes. It has been a collaborative effort, involving myself, Aaron, my wife Brianne, my mother-in-law Sabrina, my friends Steven and Rachel and countless other inspirations including my son Poete, and my newest son Lennon. We are happy to unveil, with all our love, the new and improved Organic Fair Trade.

Though the look is much different, the functionality of the site is largely unchanged. Hopefully you will find things a little easier to read with our increased font size. And also we have already seen the one page chekout getting some use! But the best is yet to come, as we are now going to be able to return to the serious business of increasing our selection of ethical products, especially fair trade clothing, and providing you with extensive news, research and information about the growing organic and fair trade movements.

Organic Fair Trade was just mentioned in the May issue of Sojourners, a peace and justice magazine:

http://www.sojo.net/

If you click on the May issue, then on the article "what can I do," we appear under the list of retailers who support trade justice. (You may have to register, but it only takes a second)

The other sites that are mentioned are HUGE. It was such an unexpected honor to be listed in their company. Wow!

Thanks for all the love and support and we are looking foward to the future!

My favorite season spring is here and boy am I ready for it! This was a very wet and cold winter for us and I believe we have all been waiting for the sun to shine a little more around here. I must however, count our blessing of being hurricane free this year which was well needed for so many who have only begun to get back on their feet. However, the rainy, cold weather still has its effects on the psyche and my endorphins have been waiting for the sunshine and warmth for quite a while now!

This season is particularly important to me this year for several reasons. First and foremost the upcoming birth of our little one that has been growing in my belly for the past eight months is due to come out in the next several weeks! I am certainly feeling the nesting qualities come over me more every day and am truly elated for this new experience for our family. Also, we have recently moved into a new home which is in a great neighborhood and is certainly more conducive to the type of lifestyle we prefer to live than our former home. Although, it was trying to move at this stage in the game for me, it has certainly turned out to be worth it! And finally, this will be my first season in years to actually have a garden again.

Always the traveler, it has been my life for some time to leave a place before the actuality of healthy garden has time to take place. For a few years I would transplant what I could and pack and move container plants but that really only lasted so long. Although, each spring I do buy a few new plants, with each move I have always lost most of them. Such was the case with our last home, which held us for about eight months. However, feeling the ever pulling desire to settle down in one spot we have committed to not moving again until we are either forced to or have the opportunity to build the house of our dreams. We realized how much “stuff” we really had this last time around and also that we are truly not getting ANY younger! Haha..

So, that being said, I have decided to dive back into the world of gardening, this time a much more mature adult with standards of maintaining only organic plants. I have always used and grown organically but felt like I needed a major touch up on my knowledge as I am taking this endeavor much more seriously than ever before. I started by following literally a step-by-step instructional blog on how to grow organic tomatoes. I planted my first seeds this past Saturday and have now a full starter tray of sprouts!

There is so much inspiration and fulfillment when you see nature work this way! To know you had a hand in creating such life creates a sense of responsibility and commitment or shall I say dedication to these plants! Ah, how it has been missed!

I know my inspiration has come from the recent turnings of my life and I look forward to watching the growth and showering my new plants with love and healthy food! I encourage anyone interested to take the first step in beginning your own organic garden. It can be done in small spaces on small budgets and help to produce such BIG benefits in your heart and soul, literally! It couldn’t have taken me more than an hour to prepare the mix of soil for my plants and get them started. Go to your local nursery or area distributor that sells plants and ask them to help you find the organic products you need to begin. They will pop them in your trunk and you are ready to go!!! If you can then try to start with organic seeds, however, if for some reason you cannot be sure to maintain your plants with organic practices and products. There are endless resources online, in your local bookstore or at the nursery itself on how to being and cultivate an organic garden.

I wish you all the best in your planting season and look forward to the growth of my own!

Is a fair trade world possible?

After learning about the growing movement of communities in Europe seeking certification as "fair trade towns" or even, in Scotland, "fair trade nations," I have recently discovered that a town in the United States, Brattleboro, Vermont, is seeking its own recognition for its widespread participation in the fair trade movement. A Brattleboro fair trade group, Ayllu, Inc ("Ayllu" is an Incan word referring to the society's basic form of political and social organization) is leading this effort due to the predominant availability of fair trade products in many of its town's shops and cafes.

I initially thought this would be the first fair trade town in the United States, but I was wrong. Apparently it would be the second. Another town, Media, Pennsylvania (pop 5,600) attained this designation last year after meeting criteria set by the European based Fair Trade Foundation. Specifically:

1) The Media Borough Council passed a resolution supporting Fair Trade, and committing to serve Fair Trade coffee and tea at its functions.
2) A range of Fair Trade products are readily available in Media’s shops and restaurants.
3) Fair Trade products are used by a number of local work places (such as law offices) and community organizations (such as churches).
4) Media coverage is provided and there is popular support for the campaign.
5) A local Fair Trade steering group from a diverse representation of institutions is working to ensure continued commitment to Fair Trade Town status.

The rising tide of fair trade towns (there are over 300 in Europe) and the recent emergence of the concept of a "fair trade nation" raises the question: is a "fair trade world" possible?

We truly believe that this is a goal worth striving for. Our greatest desire is for the word "fair trade" to become meaningless, when the production of every product meets this simple criteria. Imagine going to Home Depot and having to specifically ask for "Asbestos-free" ceiling tiles, or having to specifically search around for "non-slave labor" cotton! The fair trade movement is not an end in itself, but a drive for a world in which these common sense principles are no longer the exception, but the rule.

Fair Trade Certification...what is it about?

Lately, I have heard a lot of buzz about the situation surrounding artist Bono's clothing line, Edun, that was discontinued ,and its association with "false advertisement "of fair trade certification. Many people are dissapointed in Bono, have lost faith in fair trade concepts...but really these people are simply miseducated. From what I read, neither Bono nor any of his affilates actually claimed the clothing to be Fair Trade Certified, they simply stated that it was produced in accordance with the principles of fair trade. The fact is that there is absolutely no "certification" this clothing line could have received in order for such a claim to be true.

Here in the United States, the concept of Fair Trade is still relatively new. In 1998, the very first Fair Trade certified product, coffee, was put on the market. In the years to follow several agricultural items have been added such as cocoa, tea and rice. Although there are 19 certifying agents for fair trade here in America, we mostly hear of the organization TransFair USA, providing much of what we see is certified. You will know a product is certified Fair Trade if you see the black and white label with the person carrying a bowl in each hand. All of these products however, are agricultural products because these, as well as some fruits, are the only items that TransFair USA will ensure are produced according to fair trade guidelines.

So, even if Bono wanted his clothing line to be "certified" as Fair Trade under this logo, he had no ability to do so. This is the misconception. Nonetheless, there are those antagonists against Fair Trade who will find anything to latch onto in order to sway the public opinion.

Being in this business I have learned a lot. I have learned about the politics of trade. I have learned about the type of people who support causes such as Fair Trade and organically produced products. I have learned about the people who do not. I have learned about the importance of educating myself on these issues in order to understand what is really going on.

I can honestly say that I feel there are too few who step outside of the box to really know what is going on around them and they are contributing to some of the major causes of our countries debt and moral destruction. Too many people rely on articles such as those written to criticize Bono and his unfortunately failed attempt to expose Fair Trade principles and not enough on their own findings of how this game works.

The sad part is, the only reason it is a game is because of how little effort our American public puts into understanding the rules. Our purchases drive this economy and this economy drives the value of our work and our dollar. If we could truly come together and apply practical life lessons to the way we respond to our pocketbooks such as, "what goes around comes around," or "do unto others as you would have them do unto you," we would in time see the true power of freedom in this country. We need to create our own destiny, for our children and their children and not let it lie in the hands of politicians who have no clue who we are as individuals or corporations that are driven by growing profits. We have to come together to be the system that we want...not fight the one that is already in place. Let the folks who are driven by fear and power learn their own lessons as we come together as a community with consiousness about our land, our bodies and all people being created equally.

I make a proposal to anyone who reads this. It is so simple. Take five minutes to sign yourself up for Google News Alerts or Yahoo News Alerts for the terms Fair Trade and Organic. Dedicate yourself to at least one article in each category once a week and broaden your knowledge of these issues. Form your own opinion and then weigh it against others who are educated. Be your own conscious voice, whether you hear it from your heart or your head at least it belongs to you.

By the way, there are many people out there that are participating in supporting Fair Trade products and the producers that cannot yet get certification. They can and are able to become a part of the Fair Trade Federation which is an organization that accepts members, after a long and detailed inspection on standards of the working relationships between producers and importers. Basically you fill out an application and provide all of the required paperwork, you are thoroughly checked out and then are accepted or not if you fulfill their standards. This process can take up to two years. You will know a a Fair Trade Federation member by the tag on the product, here in the US it is a pair of hands on an eye-shaped oval.

Fair Trade Towns

So, I have been enveloping myself in the past two days with recent articles and information about organic and fair trade practices, where they are at and where they are going. I am pleased to say that it seems the concept of fair trade is more on the rise than I had imagined, I get several alerts a day about a new article. I am not so pleased to realize that almost every article I get (say 4 out of 5) is from the UK, who yet again seem to be light years ahead of us Americans on such important issues.

If you have ever been to Europe perhaps you got the same feeling I did. This feeling that the world you came from in the United States was indulgent, chaotic and a bit shallow compared to the seemingly simple lifestyles of those who are living and thriving well in European cities. There are so many little things I noticed were done differently, but most importantly what seemed to be different was the consciousness. The lack of fear driven purchasing, swirling time entrapment and most importantly for me the emphasis on maintaining quality over quantity. I am sure I could be considered to be stereotyping beyond borders here, however, I do feel that generally this is the overall shared perspectives of most Europeans. This is perhaps why they giggle and gawk at us Americans, it's like watching a child respond to the world, full of nothing but desire and inexperience. I do understand the age difference in our cultures could play a significant role, but I don't know.

Most recently, I read a letter written by a women from the town of Torrington requesting that her town be considered a Fair Trade town. According to the letter there are two other towns that have now recieved that label, officially and have done so by fulfilling certain requirements that Torrington has also fulfilled. Taken from the letter:

To be an official Fair Trade town, you have to meet a number of criteria. These are:

1, To have an active steering group, promoting and developing Fair Trade locally;

2, For a number of businesses, churches and organisations to be using fairly traded products in their staff rooms, offices and at events;

3, For a number of shops to be selling fairly traded goods;

4, For a number of cafes and restaurants to be serving fairly traded refreshments; and

5, For the local council to be using fairly traded tea and coffee and serving fairly traded tea and coffee and serving it at their events.

So, it seems that there are 5 standard criteria, that can very easily be met to allow a town or city consideration for Fair Trade Town status in the UK.

Research tells me that the town of Torrington or Great Torrington of Devon, has a current population of approximately 60,000 people. The author of the letter claims that there is plenty of each one of the criteria taking place in this town. Plenty of restaurants, businesses, churches, retailers and a council dedicated to Fair Trade and supporting themselves and their economy this way.

Here in Lafayette, Louisiana, which boasts an in-city limit population of 110, 000 people we are lucky to be finding fair trade coffee in our most popular grocery stores (including SAMS, Albertsons, SuperOne Foods) and a few health food stores which only sell organic and is often relative to fair trade. As for finding a restaurant, cafe, clothing retailer, or group so far that has taken on fairly traded products as a mission and business, it is yet to be seen. Although we are currently working on establishing this in our own way, our resources only go as far as our internet retail business. Our bigger vision is to take our business "out onto the streets," so to speak and have a physical store of some sort that supports our values and mission with fair trade.

My suggestion to my husband is that we buy up a few of the unused (beautiful) buildings in our city's downtown area and create a Fair Trade Alley. To have shops that are dedicated to fairly traded products as well as some of our organic products, in order to make the items more accessible to our community while educating them about conscious consumerism. Problem is that this would take lots of money, at the very least...

See, I do not think that it does not exist here because people resist it, I believe it is because we are not as resourceful in nature. I believe that if only we can create a voice in each of our towns and cities that gathers others with similar morals and values that we can learn and grow together through exposure and experience and potentially change the world. At least in our little corner of it and hopefully be the inspiration that Torrington was for me.

My theory is that time will tell. Each day I am amazed at the evidence that supports our goals to live our lives in accordance with our beliefs in equality and health. So far, in a short amount of time we have grown in knowledge, business and spirit through our endeavors and feel nothing less than awesomely motivated to keep on truckin'. My hope is, although we may not be as quick as the UK and some other countries in developing our humanitarism within our communties that we are as successful in our own time. And may we have faith in the time it takes.

Fair Trade and Campus Entrepreneurship

Miami's Center for Social Entrepreneurship has recently found a way to earn money for its student programs, while fighting povery in Africa at the same time.

It almost sounds too good to be true, but that tends to be the nature of fair trade. Most of us are conditioned to think of poverty as a kind of "pestilence" running rampant in Third World countries, with little to no connection to us, and therefore no cure near at hand. It seems hard to believe that something as simple as paying fair wages for goods could actually eliminate poverty--but that is exactly what these "social entrprenuers" are banking on.

Teaming with Edun Apparell Ltd, a fair trade clothing company founded by Irish singer-humanitarian Bono and his wife, students buy blank T-shirts at $4 a piece and screen print them with various icons and slogans such as: "I know who made my t-shirt, do you?" Students sell the t-shirts to other students to raise money, as well as increase awareness about concepts of fair trade.

They are hoping this idea can spread to other campuses as a progressive means of fundraising for student organizations, as well as a way to increase awareness about "social entreprenuership."

Fair Trade Forum 2007 in Perth

Scotland's first fair trade forum was launched this week in Perth by International Development Minister Patricia Ferguson. One of the topics of discussion is movement towards making Scotland a "fair trade nation." If successful, Scotland may become a leading player in the fight against poverty worldwide, moving fair trade beyond "product-based" or even "company-level" approaches, and into the realm of public policy.

The criteria Scotland is working to meet in order to attain "fair trade nation" status are as follows:

100 per cent of local authorities to have active Fair Trade groups working towards Fair Trade status

55 per cent of local authority areas to have Fair Trade status, with 10% annual increase in following years

All of Scotland's cities to have Fair Trade status

Minimum of 55 per cent of Scottish towns to have active Fair Trade groups working towards Fair Trade status

60 per cent of Higher Education institutions to have active Fair Trade groups working towards Fair Trade status

Increase by 5 per cent each year the proportion of the population who know about Fair Trade (currently 45 per cent)

75 per cent of people to buy a Fair Trade product every year

40 per cent of people who regularly buy Fair Trade products

According to the BBC: "Fair trade activism is one of the fastest growing grassroots social movements across Europe."

"In 1994 there were just three fair trade products on the market. Now there are more than 2,000 - including coffee and chocolate - on sale in Scottish shops and supermarkets."

The movement in Europe is an indication both of how much room the fair trade movement has to grow in the United States, as well as a hopeful sign of what may lie ahead.

Mardi Gras: Made In China

In the years 2001-2003 I had the priviledge of working with David Redmon on the award winning film Mardi Gras: Made In China. The following is a tribute to the film, the filmmakers who are my friends, and the importance of placing our gifts in the service of Love.

Mardi Gras: Made in China is currently available to institutions, non-profits, schools & universities. Click here to order.

In the fall of 2000, I had the blessing of meeting David Redmon, who would become one of the single most influential people of my life. He was only about 27 at that time, teaching sociology at my university. I never took his classes, however, but met him over coffee one day when I learned he was showing films to his students about corporate globalization, and the rising tide of protest against it. He and I quickly became friends and had endless discussions about the destructive expansion of capitalism around the world, with sweatshops and leveled rainforests alike left in its wake. We knew that we were unhappy about the destruction of lives and cultures around the world, including in our own country, but figuring out how exactly to contribute to positive change was a long, difficult and at times dangerous process.

Soon after I met David he travelled to China to visit a factory where the majority of the Mardi Gras beads one sees in New Orleans are made. David's graduate dissertation had been on Mardi Gras, and the use of beads as a sexual currency was a much-discussed theme. It wasn't until he had finished his thesis, however, that he began wondering about this one aspect he had not considered: where did the beads come from? The search for an answer to this question led him on a long journey that ultimately resulted in this internationally award winning film: Mardi Gras: Made in China.

I had the honor of working with David on this project at various stages, and had the even more unexpected (and perhaps undeserved!) one of being named an "advisor and assistant editor." While I certainly did my best to contribute as much as I could in the way of ideas and (especially at the beginning) technical assistance, David's personal drive and determination was something I could hardly fathom at the time. As the years passed and the film's renown grew, I was impressed beyond measure at David's success in placing his personal talents in full service of the vision of equality that he and I shared.

Now, David and I live hundreds of miles apart--he in Brooklyn, New York with his talented partner Ashley Sabin, producing films under the now actualized Carnivalesque Films, while I am living and working with my wife Brianne in Lafayette, Louisiana on our own labor of love. It is only now with the creation of our website, Organic Fair Trade, that I am beginning to understand where the drive that I so admired in David comes from. I fully believe that the world can best be changed when all of us, who have the vision, also find the courage to put the full force of our talents in service of what we truly believe. It is a sacrifice that is its own reward.

Peace and Love,

It's Unfair!!!

by James Rosen
Wednesday, January 24, 2007

WASHINGTON - A bipartisan group of senators introduced legislation Tuesday aimed at preventing American companies from profiting from the use of foreign sweatshops and other unfair labor practices abroad.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, joined four Democrats and independent Sen. Bernard Sanders of Vermont in sponsoring a bill that would allow U.S. firms to sue competitors that they believe are selling imported products made in overseas sweatshops.

"Believe it or not, ladies and gentlemen, there's a world out there where people are exploited - sometimes literally to the point of death - just to make a buck," Graham said at a news conference in the Capitol.

Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., said free-trade agreements between the United States and other countries have fueled the growth of sweatshop production in recent years.

Dorgan cited China and Jordan as major offenders, saying their factories employ workers as young as 5, often in long shifts, brutal conditions and for little or no pay. In many cases, he said, the foreign countries violate their own poorly enforced labor laws.

"There is no reason for the United States of America to allow the sale of products made in slave-labor-like conditions," Dorgan said.

About 250 million children worldwide, ages 14 or younger, work in factories, many in deplorable conditions, he said.

If it becomes law, the legislation could have a major impact on large U.S. retailers such as Wal-Mart and Target, which contract with foreign firms to produce many of the products they sell to Americans.

Dorgan said Wal-Mart and Target have taken steps to reduce their sale of such goods. In one instance, he said, Wal-Mart canceled its contract with a Chinese factory after delivering three warnings that went unheeded.

The Chinese firm then hired a consultant who helped it secure phony documents that falsely showed that the company had eliminated its sweatshops.

Dorgan moved similar legislation last year, but it drew only five co-sponsors, all Democrats, and died in the Republican-controlled Congress.

Dorgan predicted that with Graham on board - and Democrats now running Congress - the measure has better prospects.

"This is a pretty weighty co-sponsor," Dorgan said of Graham as the two senators laughed. "I mean, we're not talking about an insignificant co-sponsor. This is a big deal to us!"

Democratic Sens. Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Robert Byrd of West Virginia and Russ Feingold of Wisconsin joined Dorgan, Graham and Sanders in backing the bill.

The measure would allow an American firm to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission alleging that one of its competitors was selling products made in sweatshops.

If the FTC determined that the complaint was valid, the agency would issue an order prohibiting the import of products from the offending foreign firm. U.S. customs agents would enforce the law, assessing violators fines of $10,000 per offense.

American companies also could sue competitors in federal court to seek injunctions blocking such imports, along with punitive damages.

Graham said many U.S. firms are trying to foster fair labor practices abroad but those that encourage sweatshop production should be punished.

"If you're a business person engaged in exploiting people to build up market share, I hope you get fined, I hope you get sued," Graham said. "That's not the way to build up an economy. That's not the way to have global trade, and it's not in the best interests of America."

Starbucks Gets the Bucks

Recently, while visiting a very informative website www.oxfamamerica.org, I came across a specific article that piqued my interest. It was an article exposing the recent negotiations between Starbucks, a very well known corporate coffee franchise and the country of Ethiopia. The negotiations began over a year ago when Ethiopia approached Starbucks with a request to own their own trademark for the coffee's they provide to the chain.

The issue basically goes like this. Ethiopia has an estimated 15 million coffee farmers that culivate and sell their product to the United States for a very small amount of money. Starbucks, being a gigantic distributor of coffee's from all over the globe buys this coffee and in return marks up the price approxiamtely 80% and sells it to us consumers. Well, let's back up a minute. Before we actually get to purchase the coffee, Starbucks puts their trademark Starbucks logo on the package and then on the shelves for us to buy. The problem is Starbucks had nothing to do with the making of this coffee, however is refusing to allow Ethiopia to put a trademark of it's own claiming rights to the coffee's they have produced.

To add fuel to the fire, Starbucks lays claims to being a company that supports the economical growth of their farmers and has been doing this for years. As we can see this has been more of a marketing ploy than the truth. Surprise, surprise.

The coffee's that come from Ethiopia that the country is attempting to put their name on are Sidamo, Harar and Yirgacheffe. These are some of the finest coffee's we have available here in the United States. Some are even sold under Starbucks' Black Apron Exclusive Line for up to $26/lb. Based on the percentage that the farmer in Ethiopia makes off of this pound, he receives $1.30-$2.60 at the end of the sell. This is just enough money for the farmer to put back into his crop, not nearly enough to make a profit for the family, which is usually in the field dedicated to farming as well. This is why these countries remain in such dier conditions. Even when they become aware of the value of their crop, they are not recognized for their contributions. Most of these families live on approximately $1.00 a day. This is less than most of the families in this country on welfare or unemployment make.

It is estimated that the Starbucks empire made approximately $3.7 billion dollars in profits last year. The estimated financial growth for the entire country of Ethiopia if it were allowed to stake it's coffee claims would be approximately $88 million dollars. The coffee franchise earnings dramatically exceed those of the 15 million whose livelihood depends on producing coffee. This is why we see the commercials we do pleading for donations. These people are working for nothing! And when they finally realize their market potential and raise their voices for their rights, somehow we allow a corporation to tell them what they are worth, or not worth it seems. Perhaps it is big business that is running our government and not the other way around. The billions of bucks we put into Starbucks could be going to those who actually slave away in fields producing it to improve their way of life.

If you feel inclined to read more on this issue or to become involved please visit the website I shared at the beginning of this article. There are plenty of ways to lend our support to Ethiopia right now and push Starbucks to not only talk the talk but also walk the walk.

If you feel the need for that much needed caffeine fix, please consider browsing our many varieties of organic, fair trade coffee, including Monkey and Son's ethiopian fair trade coffee.

The only thing that even affects major corporations such as this is money and when it isn't coming in at the lightning fast rate it has been for the past ten or so years, perhaps they will see the bigger picture here.

Organic Chocolate Takes Bite Out of Market

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. chocolate lovers in growing numbers are discovering how to pander to their addiction and simultaneously help the environment by buying organically certified chocolate.

With $70 million in annual sales, organic chocolate is a tiny part of the estimated $6 billion U.S. market, but like organic coffee, it's rapidly becoming mainstream, said Chris Samuel, spokesman for Green & Black's USA Inc., at the 9th Annual New York Chocolate Show on Friday.

Organic chocolate industry revenue is growing by 40 percent a year, with Green & Black's controlling about 20 percent of the U.S. market, Samuel said.

"Taste is what started it but the press on health benefits has stimulated more interest in the natural organic market," Samuel said. "Now there is an explosion of interest."

Large and small chocolate companies are following the organic wave. A unit of Hershey Co. (NYSE:HSY - news), maker of Hershey's Kisses and Reese's peanut butter cups, purchased Oregon-based Dagoba Organic Chocolate in October.

Hershey's move followed the acquisition by British-based Cadbury Schweppes (CBRY.L) of Green & Black's in May 2005.

Jeff Shepherd, chocolatier and owner of Oregon-based Lillie Belle Farms, started offering organic chocolate, some flavored with berries, four years ago. Selling from the trunk of his car he made $500 his first year. He has since opened a small factory that generated gross revenues of $400,000 in 2006, and he estimates he will do $1 million in 2007.

"People are starting to pay attention to what they put into their bodies," Shepherd said. "And they also look at the little organic treats they put into their bodies."

While most consumers focus on taste and health, manufacturers also point out the environmental benefits.

Made from cocoa grown in sustainable rain forests, free of herbicides and pesticides, and purchased from farmers who receive guaranteed prices under fair trade agreements, organic chocolate helps protect the environment, proponents say.

Organic chocolate costs more. A one-and-a-half-ounce (43 g) bar of Shepherd's chocolate is about $2.50 compared with less than $1 for a regular chocolate bar from a corner store or vending machine.

Shepherd is undergoing the organic certification process and will spend an initial $7,000 for approval and then annual fees.
